I need a formula to calculate the surface area of structural steel members?

  1. No need to calculate. Go to http://www.engineersedge.com/structural_shapes_menu.shtml and find the shape you're using.
  2. The data in the Engineer's Edge doesn't give surface area but cross-sectional area instead. You can take the dimensional data for your particular structural shape and calculate the surface area for a unit length. Then all you have to do is multiply the result by the different lengths of your parts to get the total surface area.
